Austrian Citizenship Days
The Austrian Citizenship Days are an annual nationwide campaign (each year between 23 April and 9 May) in order to raise and strengthen public awareness of citizenship education in Austria. As an initiative by the Austrian Ministry of Education, the Citizenship Days are coordinated by polis – The Austrian Centre for Citizenship Education in Schools.
The guiding idea is the Council of Europe’s slogan Learning and Living Democracy within its Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights programme.
The campaign aims to motivate schools, youth centers, museums, radio stations, movie theaters, NGOs, institutions for adult education and other multipliers to interact and connect on the basis of citizenship education.
Workshops, trainings, class and school projects, exhibitions, movie screenings, theater performances, activities around Memorial Days, radio features etc. are samples of the manifold activities realized throughout the Citizenship Days. A special online calendar lists about 200 activities, contributions and further ideas to participate.
Topics include democracy learning, global learning, intercultural learning, governance and division of power in Austria and the European Union / the Council of Europe, human rights, minority rights, participation, diversity, inclusion and many more.
